💡 WiseUp! Vol. 31 — What's your big reading project?

This week, we’re highlighting big reading projects: would you read every Pulitzer winner, like Jeremy Anderberg? Or do you have a reading challenge? Plus, we're celebrating our new integration with OneNote with a double whammy: new documentation from Cayla and a new video from Erin.

On the app side, we're announcing the long awaited support for the Apple Pencil. We've also fixed volume navigation and occasional Ghostreader timeouts. Read on for all the details or check out our log of weekly improvements.

Before we get into the tips…

📍 Let's start with a reading recommendation

3 things I've learned about reading in the midst of my quest to read every Pulitzer winner

After setting out to read every Pultizer-winning book, Jeremy Anderberg of Read More Books shares a few lessons from his journey and explains why a big reading project might be exactly what you need. “The best way to satisfy your desire for lifelong learning is to embark on a challenging reading project. Period. It may require some endurance and even discipline, but it’s always enjoyable to check another book off your list. And most of all, it’s just a delight to learn new things and to go deeply into unexplored intellectual waters.”

Have questions about using Readwise or Reader in your workflow? We'd love to be your guide! Reply to this email with your question and you might be featured in an upcoming issue. Even if your question isn’t featured, we’ll respond to every message.

❓ A Readwise question from Sandro P:

Can I export the full content of articles to Obsidian?

Unlock the full potential of your notes by exporting entire Reader documents into Obsidian, not just highlights. With the Export All Reader Documents setting enabled, you’ll get a linked full-text version alongside your highlight file, keeping your workspace organized and comprehensive. Plus, you can tailor file names to match your preferred structure.

❓ A Reader question from Tobías:

Why doesn’t Reader show a transcript, even when the YouTube video has subtitles?

No more missing transcripts. Reader lets you reflow the content into a parsed view and pull it in as soon as it’s available. If YouTube hasn’t generated the transcript yet, you’ll see a message explaining that and can try again later. To ask Reader to re-fetch a YouTube transcript, open the command palette (Cmd+K) and type ‘reparse’.

📖 New help doc of the week

Export from Readwise to OneNote

You can now export your Readwise highlights to OneNote! To help you get the most of this new integration, Cayla created a comprehensive guide to teach you what it can do and how you can configure the settings.

🎬 New video of the week

Export to OneNote

For years, OneNote was one of our most popular integration request, but it was virtually impossible to build because Microsoft kept their API private. Not anymore: the integration is finally available. Here’s how to get started.

📰 Aug 23 - Aug 29 updates

What's new in Reader and Readwise

✏️ NEW! Apple Pencil Support — Mati built first class support for the Apple Pencil, so you can now highlight naturally (like it works in Apple Books) while reading. You no longer need to tap and hold to make a highlight, and you can scroll using the pencil in the margins.

🔖 NEW! Added API Keys — It’s now possible to manage document tags using the Reader Document UPDATE API, thanks to Piotr. We also now have an option to fetch the raw source file for PDFs and EPUBs via the withRawSourceUrl API key.

🔊 Fixed Volume Navigation — Johannes fixed a bug where volume buttons couldn't navigate across chapter breaks in EPUB books when using continuous scroll mode. You can now use your device's volume buttons to seamlessly move between chapters, which is especially helpful on e-ink devices.

👻 Fixed Ghostreader Timeouts — AI-powered features like summaries, Chat with Highlights and Documents, and Ghostreader prompts should now be more reliable. Ibai fixed some timeout issues that were occasionally causing requests to fail.

📝 Fixed Note Editing — Ibai fixed a bug where editing notes on Readwise highlights could sometimes cause content to duplicate or get removed.

🔁 Improved Export Reliability — Rasul tweaked how our export integrations get queued and handle retrying after failures.

🛜 Parsing Updates —  Krzys improved how Reader handles posts from readwise.io, feedblitz.com, msn.com, and tldrnewsletter.com.

👍 Three featured finds

From generalist writer Abi

Something to read 📖
Abi finally picked up Jennette McCurdy’s memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died. Moving, often funny, and sharply written, it’s a cohesive memoir that reads like a novel, blending heartbreaking conflict with redemption.

Something to focus 🐭
Abi is locked in with her trusty Logitech MX Master mouse. She loves its comfortable grip and upgraded scroll wheels, plus it pairs with up to three devices for easy switching between hers and her husband’s computers.

Something to unwind 🍦
Ice Cream for Bears is Abi’s new obsession: simple ingredients, creamy goodness. If you’re at Sprouts on 9/15, you might catch her hunting down the new pumpkin spice flavor on launch day.

Sunset on the horizon

Weekend explorers got some extra time thanks to Labor Day weekend. How far did we go? Our very own Artem set sail across the US, from NY to CA, and the entire team is cheering on his journey. We bet he has fantastic playlists rocking in the background!

See you next week!
