💡 WiseUp! Vol. 27 — Doomscroll smarter, not harder

This week, we provide tools to combat doomscrolling—or at least make it more productive through adding your own highlights! We also show you how to easily create QA flashcards with Ghostreader, and how to enjoy a curated Sunday collection of your favorite highlights.

On the app side, we’ve improved Twitter sync by making sure you're notified if your connection fails. We’ve also enhanced chapter breaks to improve the EPUB reading experience and more. Read on for all the details or check out our log of weekly improvements.

Before we get into the tips…

📍 Let's start with a reading recommendation

Where to find media to consume instead of doomscrolling

This week we’re sharing a gem from Mapu, author of Instead of Doomscrolling—her ultimate guide to publications, magazines, podcasts, YouTube channels, and fun corners of the internet. A favorite podcast: "A Mug of Insights: Learning, Reading, Self-Improvement. Robin provides incredibly useful tips and insights, both on his podcast and on his Substack. You will most likely enjoy his content if you’re into reading and academia, as well if you want to improve your literacy and attention span."  A favorite newsletter/RSS: "Longreads: Weekly Reading Picks. Especially at the beginning of my journey, this was a really great resource as it allowed me to find a lot of the resources listed on here as they send out weekly reading picks of long-form content."

Have questions about using Readwise or Reader in your workflow? We'd love to be your guide! Reply to this email with your question and you might be featured in an upcoming issue. Even if your question isn’t featured, we’ll respond to every message.

❓ A Readwise question from Mihai B:

How can I get a daily email with just my favorite highlights?

Want a moment of calm and inspiration every Sunday? If you favorite enough highlights, you'll get a special email filled with just the quotes and passages you love most. To favorite a highlight, click the heart icon or tap the F key. You can also use inline tagging and type .favorite into the note field while highlighting. The more you favorite, the better your Sunday email becomes.

❓ A Reader question from Alex S:

Is there a way to order articles by publish date?

Yes–there are many sorting options, including Date Published. My personal favorite is Random, though. Perfect for when I want to be surprised!

📖 New help doc of the week

Use Ghostreader to create Mastery flashcards

Did you know that you can use Ghostreader to automatically create Mastery flashcards in Readwise? This week, Cayla has added a new prompt the help center’s Prompt Library that uses the .qa action tag to help you revisit key concepts from the documents you’ve read.

🎬 New video of the week

What if doomscrolling could be good for you?

This week, we’re sharing a new community-built plugin from longtime-Reader user Yusef. When turned on, his free plugin will embed your Readwise highlights into your Twitter, Instagram, and other social media feeds in lieu of other posts. Erin put it to the test and can confirm it’s made her daily doomscroll sessions much more inspiring 😊

📰 Jul 26 - Aug 1 updates

What's new in Reader and Readwise

🐦 Improved Twitter Sync — Reader now better detects when Twitter authentication expires, thanks to Rasul. You'll receive an email to re-authenticate if your Twitter connection needs to be refreshed, ensuring your bookmarks keep syncing smoothly.

📚 Improved Chapter Breaks — Johannes improved how ebooks handle chapter and scene breaks, so we should now properly support a wider range of EPUB files.

🔗 Fixed Public Links — Thanks to Scott, you can now properly disable public links from the sidebar.

📄 Fixed Download Options — Scott fixed the "Download with annotations" command so it will only appear for PDFs. For other file types, you'll now see the appropriate command.

🤖 Fixed Ghostreader Definitions — Thanks to Johannes, Ghostreader can now properly define highlighted words by understanding their context better. Using the the {{ selection.paragraph }} or the {{ selection.sentence }} parameter should no longer fail to fetch the surrounding context.

🪟 Fixed View Selection — Thanks to Arek, you can now scroll through your entire list of views when adding them to your mobile home screen.

📶 Fixed Offline Loading — Johannes fixed a bug where uncached documents would get stuck loading when offline. Documents now properly show their offline status instead of showing a loading screen.

📖 Fixed Missing Headers — Thanks to Johannes, article headers no longer disappear after reading a book in continuous scroll mode.

🛜 Parsing Updates —  Tadek improved how Reader handles posts from members.specialprojects.jp.

💬 From the Readwise group chat

Not your average Thursday night

As a remote team, we value these encounters so, so much. Our globetrotter, Angie, met up with Tadek in his native Warsaw to enjoy local food, drinks, and stories. We can’t say we’re not jealous!

See you next week!

Warmly,
the Readwise customer support team
