💡 WiseUp! Vol. 25 — Learn to rebuild your brain, browse similar highlights, set up your Boox Palma, and more!

This week, we dive into Joan Westenberg’s proposal for a new way to filter the content you consume and rebuild your brain. We’re also covering some fresh updates, like saving Reddit comments, switching the model for the Chat with Highlights feature, and more.

On the app side, we’re working on optimizing the Reading Experience by smoothing continuous scrolling and cleaning up Ghostreader settings. We also fixed a couple of bugs. Read on for all the details or check out our log of weekly improvements.

Before we get into the tips…

📍 Let's start with a reading recommendation

I spent 90 days rebuilding my brain. Here's what I learned

Joan Westenberg went viral a few weeks ago for her piece I Deleted My Second Brain, and now she’s back with a step-by-step guide to retraining her thinking. "There are periods in your - our lives - life when something isn't broken, but it's clearly out of alignment. You keep absorbing information but never quite understand what you've learned. You keep writing, but none of it feels like yours. You keep reaching for answers, but you haven't sat with a question long enough to really want one. That's where this challenge lives. You don't have to unplug from the world, but you do have to start choosing what gets in."

❓ A Readwise question from Marie D:

Do you have a 'Find similar highlight' feature on the Browse page?

Yes, we do! You can now use Find Similar Highlights while browsing any highlight. Look for the overlapping speech bubbles icon to discover related highlights through our Chat with Highlights feature.

❓ A Reader question from Robert L:

How can I save individual Reddit comments to Reader?

If you save the link to a Reddit comment, Reader will import the original post, the comment you want to save, and any threaded comments underneath.

📰 Jun 11 - Jul 15 updates

What's new in Reader and Readwise

🎬 Fixed Enhanced TranscriptsMati fixed a bug where enhanced transcripts would appear to be processing indefinitely, even after completion. You should now be able to enhance YouTube video transcripts without them getting stuck in a loading state.

📄 Fixed PDF View on AndroidArek fixed an issue where the bottom action menu would flash and jerk when switching between "view as PDF" and "view as text" modes on Android. You should now be able to smoothly toggle between viewing modes without glitches.

🌍 Improved File Encoding Scott fixed an issue where uploaded PDFs with non-English characters (like Cyrillic text) would display strange characters like in titles and author names. The text should now render properly on previously-uploaded and new documents.

🔊 Adjusted TTS Notification Andrew fixed a confusing "language updated" message that appeared when changing text-to-speech voice gender within the same language. We’ve changed the language here to a more accurate "Voice updated" message when switching between male and female voices.

📜 Smoothed Continuous Scrolling Johannes fixed some scrolling issues in continuous scroll mode that occasionally caused unexpected jumping and positioning problems. If you read in continuous scroll mode, you’ll hopefully notice a smoother experience now.

🔍 Fixed Search Edits Ibai fixed an issue where editing highlights through the Readwise 1.0 search interface wouldn't immediately show your changes, even though they were being saved. You should now see your highlight edits reflected right away in search results.

🧹 Cleaned Up Ghostreader Settings Ibai cleaned up the mobile interface so that Ghostreader options no longer appear in menus when you have the feature turned off in your settings. You can now enjoy a cleaner interface that only shows the features you've opted-into.

🎁 Fixed Bonus Highlights Ibai fixed a bug where bonus highlights were excluded from Daily Reviews if you had Readwise tips frequency set to "Never." You should now receive bonus highlights in your reviews regardless of your tip settings.

📚 Fixed Daily ReviewTristan fixed a bug where the Daily Review would stop working properly after opening and closing the "Similar Highlights" chat feature on mobile. You should now be able to check out Similar Highlights during your review without interrupting your flow.

📝 Fixed Note Shortcut Ibai fixed an issue where pressing "N" to open a highlight note input wasn't working properly. This should be working again.

A tool to rule them all

We clearly love a good Lord of the Rings reference. And apparently, we also love collecting these tiny tools. We’ve got buckets of them, yet rarely use them.

See you next week!

Warmly,
